Course Syllabus

Goals:

  • To gain experience writing for the sorts of audiences encountered in business and professional contexts.
  • To gain familiarity with the basic written formats used in business and professional contexts.
  • To gain experience developing a major written report, from initial proposal to final draft.
  • To gain experience with formal oral presentations.
  • To gain mastery of the basic stylistic techniques of business and professional discourse and to refine editing and revising skills.
  • To gain experience with the use of figures, illustrations and layout for reports.
  • To gain familiarity with the basics of at least one form of electronic document design.

Policies

Form: All work except rough drafts should be word-processed or typed.

Editing: All work must meet professional standards of editing for grammar and mechanics in order to receive a passing grade.

Revisions: Students are encouraged to review drafts of their work with the professor; each student will be required to submit a preliminary draft of the final project for review with the professor. In addition, each student may choose to revise and submit for re-grading one piece of finished work, not including the final project report; the revision grade and the original grade will be averaged.

Late Papers: Work is due on the assigned date. Late work will incur a penalty of one letter grade per day late.

Attendance: Any unexcused absences in excess of three will result in a lowered final grade.
