Group Project: Designing a Web Page

Rationale

To fulfill the requirements of the course, students must learn the basics of html and of web page design, and develop some familiarity with MS FrontPage. This part of the course will not make a webmaster of anyone, but it should de-mystify the web somewhat, and it should enable students to be more critical of the design and function of the internet resources they encounter in business and organizational life.

Assignment

The class will be divided into working groups of 4 or 5 people each. Each working group will be responsible for producing a full set of web pages for incorporation into the course website. These web pages will present examples of actual course assignments so that future students will have models of letters and memos to work from.

Requirements

Each set of web pages should include the following:
  • A main page
    • Using appropriate headers and backgrounds.  If the group members wish, the page may use the same logos and backgrounds as the other main class pages (like this one)
    • Giving an explanation of the material included in the subsidiary pages
    • Containing links to the subsidiary pages

  • Sample business letter pages
    • Including at least one business letter without a letterhead
    • Including at least one business letter with a letterhead
      • Note: The letterhead should be incorporated as an image--it is the group's job to set up the image so that it works as a letterhead on the page. Click here for sample images to incorporate.
      • Hint:  Try using a table to get the image and the typographical elements to line up properly.

  • Sample memo pages
    • Including at least one audience analysis memo
    • Including at least one other memo
    • Incorporating the use of lists, bold-face division headings, etc.

  • A "checklist" page of common problems in business letters and memos

Students are also encouraged to incorporate tables, graphics, and other elements of design as these seem appropriate. Anyone who is interested in experimenting with JavaScript, Java applets, or other more sophisticated tools is encouraged to do so.
