English 200: Professional Communication Prof. James Hunter Office: 336 Predolin (608) 663-3375 Course DescriptionEnglish 200: Professional Communication is intended to prepare students for writing and speaking in business, professional, and other organizational contexts. Students will write letters, memos, proposals, reports and resumes, as well as designing a web page and giving at least two formal oral presentations. In addition, each student will produce a major written project over the course of the semester; for more details on the nature of the major project, see the Major Project page. Specifics of course requirements and assignments are included on the Course Syllabus.
Some Notes About the CourseCollaboration: Much of the work throughout the semester will be done in groups. Students will revise drafts of written work together, will share advice in the construction of their major projects, and will design and produce their web pages as collaborative group projects. Class participation is absolutely vital to the success of the course, and will be taken seriously in the computation of the final grade. When necessary, students should also be prepared to meet with their groups outside of class time. Use of e-mail and other electronic means of facilitating collaboration is strongly encouraged.Grammar and editing: Written work for the class is expected to be grammatically correct, and edited to professionally acceptable standards. Students who have difficulty with specific aspects of grammar or editing should work individually with the professor, or consult the online resources available through the Resources for Writing page. A grammar reference, such as the Little, Brown Handbook, is also strongly recommended for the course.
