I believe that Sir Gawain wore the green girtle as a reminder of his sin. To show himself and the world that he has sinned and is not perfect. This connects to religion because it is realizing that someone has sin and then showing that they acknowledge it and feel guilty of this sin. He first of all was dishonest when it came to the game of exchanging winnings with the king. He lied when he never told the king about the girtle that the woman gave him. He was also going against the chivalric codes.
