At the end of the poem Sir Gawain wears the green belt to show his shame and imperfections. It is the first truly humble act of Sir Gawain. While he does this the court finds it more stylish then not and proceeds to almost make a joke of Gawain by all wearing green sashes. His only crime in the story was keeping the green sash to himself and not presenting it to his host.
