The first sections of Malory’s Morte d’Arthur often strike modern readers as oddly disjointed. Once we get past Arthur’s conception and his accession to the throne, the narrative covers battle after battle and quest after quest (including even a long campaign against the Roman Emperor which we have omitted from the assigned reading). Assuming that Malory is a decent storyteller, what purpose do you think these sections have? Are they organizled exactly the same way the rest of the Morte d’Arthur is? Do they accomplish anything that is important for the shape of the whole narrative? What would the Morte d’Arthur be like without them?
