Assuming Malory is good storyteller, I think these sections allow us to see how Arthur has influenced the story and lives of the rest of the knights. Most of the quests in these narratives are linked to Arthur in one way or another. I don’t think that they are organized like the rest of Morte d’Arthur is. Some of the narratives will bring another story or another knight and then go on to say that this will be brought later. Whereas the beginning of the book is in chronological order of Arthur’s accession to the throne. Without these narratives the story would be very dull. Since most of the action takes place without Arthur being the main component there would be no great epic tale of the knights. The story would just be Arthur’s accession to throne and then his death. Most of the time Arthur is only mentioned and does not seem to be very active in the quests that this story is filled with. These narratives give us a full picture of the knights and Arthurian legends in general. They also help us see how Arthur’s mistakes and behaviors affect the other knights in the story.
