Although Malory was not a brilliant man he was somewhat clever. The first tale of King Arthur not only establishes him as king but also gives his credentials. Malory does not just state anything about anyone. He skims details and lets the reader fill in the blank. Which can sometimes be disturbing. The first tale not only makes Arthur king but establishes why he is a good one. The quests are the only quests he really goes on during the entire book. After the first he takes a more diplomatic route and sends others on quests and battles. Besides the last battles. Each battle Arthur fights in the beginning only proves himself more as a king as do the quests. It establishes he is fit for the job.
