FACT SHEET

The writing and communication skills that are developed and enhanced by an English major or minor are widely recognized as valuable assets. Today all professionals and executives need to know how to speak and write clearly and effectively.

English majors often broaden the scope of their studies by adding a minor in business or performing arts. Other students elect to strengthen their programs by adding an English minor to a major such as Computer Information Systems, History, Marketing, or Elementary Education.

Students majoring in English will have an opportunity to take classes such as:

• Women Writers
      • Introduction to Journalism
            • Literature of American Minorities
                  • Mythology
                        • Drama
                              • Magazine Writing
                                    • Creative Writing
                                          • Investigative Reporting
                                                • Asian-American Writers
                                                       • Shakespeare
                                                             • Romantics and Victorians
                                                                   • Black Women Writers
                                                                         • The Age of Wit and Wisdom

FACULTY
The English faculty is composed of committed scholars who are enthusiastic about both research and teaching.
Advanced writing courses are taught by professional writers with expertise in their specialties.  Advanced literature courses are often taught by faculty members who research and publish in their specialties. The English writing program includes professional journalists, scholars, and creative writers who have published widely.

OPPORTUNITIES
The English department sponsors a literary magazine, The Cerebral Cafe, staffed and published by students. English majors may contribute work to the magazine as well as gain editorial and managerial experience by working on its editing, design, and layout.

Although the student newspaper,
On the Edge, operates independently from the department, English majors are encouraged to join its staff.

An annual
Writing Contest offers all of the College’s students an opportunity to win recognition and cash prizes for their fiction, poetry, and essays.

Each semester, the English Department hosts V
isits to Campus by published writers in an Evening with the Author series.

Fine Arts Grants are available for qualified students who plan to major or minor in English. These grants are renewable for up to four years. A portfolio review is required. Contact the English Department for more information at 800.444.4861 x2803.

The Madison area provides opportunities for students to attend performances by the
American Players’ Theatre, noted for its Shakespearean productions, as well as plays by local repertory groups and the College’s own theatre program. Students may also attend lectures and readings by guest speakers, including literary scholars and writers at local bookstores and coffeehouses.

Summer or semester-long study and travel in Great Britain, Scotland, and Australia is encouraged and facilitated. Internships are arranged so that students may have direct experience in the field while completing their undergraduate English major.

“The English department has opened my eyes to
more than just famous authors. I have been introduced
to so many great works of art that I would
have never read if I hadn’t come to Edgewood.”
